BIOGRAPHIES

Beforelight group was formed in 2007 in order to experiment with light and it creates large-scale light art interventions in public space, by activating citizens’ participation.The light interventions at Pittaki Street and Stoa Emporon in Athens have been innovative proposals of creative lighting that renewed the physiognomy of the city. Itsartworks have been presented in exhibitions, museums, and contemporary art festivals, both in Greece and abroad.

The group was awarded with the Gold Award in the category Artistic Lighting for its Christmas interventions at Stavros Niarchos Park of the SNFCC at the Greek Lighting Awards 2020.

During 2013-2015, with the support of the European Cultural Foundation, Beforelight realized the project Urban Lightscapes, a European research and participation program for the creative design of urban lighting, developing actions in Greece, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Beforelight conceptualizes, designs, and applies light art and design, in an effort to encourage public collective experience with natural or artificial light. The group follows a process which takes site specificity into account, along with the innovative use of old and new lighting devices.

Beforelight members are: Eliza Alexandropoulou, ChristinaAmpatzidou, Konstantina Evangelou, Kelly Efraimidou, Dimitris Theocharoudis, Maria Lazaridou, VasileiosNtovros and Eirini Steirou.

ELIZA ALEXANDROPOULOU
1984, Stage lighting designer

Graduate of the Fine Arts School Α.U.TH. (Drama Department).
For the last 17 years she has been working as a freelance stage lighting designer based in Athens.      She has designed the lighting for numerous theatre plays and dance performances in Greece and abroad. She has received several honorary awards for her work.

CRISTINA AMPATZIDOU
1983, Architect – Urbanist

Graduated from AUTH, Cristina holds a Master from TU Delft. She lives and works in Rotterdam as an independent researcher.
She creates participatory design processes in order to activate public spaces.
She has been a guest teacher of the Urban Body studio in TU Delft and an editor of various architecture related magazines.

KELLY EFRAIMIDOU
1983, Scenographer – Lighting Designer

Graduate of the Theatre Department at AUTH.
She has collaborated with set designers A.Vettas, E.Drini, G.Patsas and L.Karakosta in productions of the National Theatre of Northern Greece and Peiramatiki skini tis Texnis.
She has designed theatre and visual art workshops.
She lives and works in Thessaloniki as set and lighting designer. Since 2011, she also works in theatre arts education in local schools.

KONSTANTINA EVANGELOU
1976, Architect

Graduate of the Polytechnic School of AUTH.
She lives and works in Larissa, still fascinated by the theories of Chaos.

DIMITRIS THEOCHAROUDIS
1983, Architect

Lives and works in London as an architectural lighting designer.

MARIA LAZARIDOU
1984, Theatrologist – Dramatologist

Graduate of Drama Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Dramaturgy and Performance Theory.
Scholar of State Scholarships Foundation.
Amateur occupation with writing of short stories.
She lives and works in Thessaloniki as a dramaturgist and lighting designer in theatre and as a coordinator of creative workshops for children.

VASILEIOS NTOVROS
1981, Architect

A.U.TH graduate with a Master at ΙΑΑC-Barcelona, and former coordinator of ImagineTheCity.
His work has been nominated, awarded and published in several international competitions, exhibitions, conferences and magazines.
Since 2007 he has been collaborating with various design offices in Greece and abroad, while at the same time he maintains his own architectural office in Athens and Chalkida.
His interest is focused on the process of creating environments with spatial and social impact
He lives between cities and experiments with the creative use of digital and physical mediums.

EIRINI STEIROU
1981, Director

Eirini studied Architecture in Thessaloniki, GR and Cinema production in San Francisco, USA as a Fulbright scholar.
Αs a filmmaker, she has been awarded the Murphy and Cadogan Fellowship for the Arts from San Francisco Foundation.
Her thesis film was selected to represent Greece in Rome Biennale of European Young Artists in 2011.
Eirini currently lives in Athens and works as a director.
