The installation “Under a Different Light” was first presented in Thessaloniki, in 2010. Beforelight invited the residents to collect and donate their old lighting fixtures, repaired them and hanged them over the same, parallel buildings of Ernest Hebrard Street, in order to provide the lighting setup for a big street closing party of the action “Thessaloniki…in a different way”, coordinated by Parallaxi magazine.
In November 2012 the group inaugurated the light installation in Athens, as part of the “Synoikia Pittaki” project ( “Synoikia” means neighborhood in Greek), a truly collaborative initiative by Imagine the City, a cluster for urban regeneration, and Beforelight. People of Athens were invited to donate their old lighting fixtures, while murals were painted along the walls of the street by the artists Giorgos Kez and Cristina Chevis, in order to transform this abandoned street of central Athens, into a homely space.
A big inaugural street party took place to turn on the lights of the installation, while some other actions have realised throughout the year. Although “Under a Different Light” was a temporary intervention, it created a new urban destination by changing the character of the entire neighborhood and as a result the installation is on site until now.
